USD MEPN Student’s at Bayside Community Center

This post is written by 2nd year MEPN student and guest writer, Basma Adams

Bayside Community Center is a neighborhood-based organization that serves Linda Vista and all its community members. They offer social services, information on how to get involved in advocacy, and educational opportunities to better serve Linda Vista as a whole. Some of the many noble services and programs they offer include a summer academic club, emergency food distribution, language assistance, and garden therapy.

Bayside strongly believes in the mission to empower and improve the community through food distribution by teaching individuals how to plant and harvest fresh produce. They currently have a community garden where they grow seasonal fruits and vegetables that they plant themselves and harvest to hand out to community members on Wednesdays. Currently, they are in the works to transition their community garden to be located at the Linda Vista Community park where they will feature outdoor garden classes and community rental plots.

As incoming 2nd year MEPN students, we have been incredibly lucky to have spent the summer semester with the Bayside team and members learning about the amazing initiatives they provide to the Linda Vista community as well as getting our hands dirty in the garden! With their guidance, we have been able to play a part in their Resident Leadership Academy (RLA) – a 10-week course that teaches resident leaders the tools and knowledge to engage within their community and enact the changes they need. We’re all excited to lend our hearts and minds and incorporate our lessons from the MEPN program to teach the residents more about how they can become leaders of their own health!

As this semester has progressed, we have learned a great deal from Kim, Rose, Kevin, Tomi, Amy and all the Bayside resident’s and can’t wait to continue to work alongside them in the Fall and assist Bayside in their mission to create a healthier and safer community.            As incoming 2nd year MEPN students, we have been incredibly lucky to have spent the summer semester with the Bayside team and members learning about the amazing initiatives they provide to the Linda Vista community as well as getting our hands dirty in the garden!
